Exploring the Future of Home Design: Insights from IBS and KBIS 2024

At Lewis Builders, our dedication to innovation drives us to stay abreast of the latest design news, materials, and software. This is all to ensure we stay informed of the best practices in the industry and deliver unparalleled quality in our projects. This commitment recently led us to the International Builders’ Show (IBS) and Kitchen & Bath Industry Show (KBIS) 2024 in Las Vegas, where we immersed ourselves in the latest trends and breakthroughs in the residential construction industry. These co-located events, as the largest annual light construction and kitchen & bath shows globally, presented an impressive array of ideas, products, and technologies. Drawing inspiration from a record-breaking 130,000 visitors from over 100 countries, we explored the new norms set to define home design and construction in the coming years. Below are some of our primary takeaways from this excursion.

A Return to Boldness and Color

The resurgence of bold, bright colors and patterns was a striking trend at IBS 2024. From the walls to the appliances, floors, and more, eye-catching color was prominent. Green made a particularly strong comeback. Showcased in everything from Kohler tubs and sinks to cabinets, sofas, and wallpaper, the various shades of green seen across the display floor signified a fresh and invigorating direction in home design.

The Art of Finishes and Textures

In addition to the attention-grabbing colors being showcased, a diversity of finishes and textures were also on display for admiration. We saw a creative blend of gloss, matte, textured, smooth, and brushed finishes, particularly highlighting wood, marble, and unique rough surfaces. This year, textures proved to be as varied and interesting as colors, underscoring a move towards more dynamic and visually engaging styles in contemporary design.

Fun with Display: Open Shelving, Glass Doors, and Creative Lighting

Another noteworthy trend that caught our attention at the shows was the innovative use of open shelving and glass doors, signifying a shift towards designs that are not just functional but also visually and architecturally compelling. This year, what stood out was the incorporation of metal supports and bracing in open shelving systems, moving away from the fashionable “floating” shelves of the past. This addition y provides a sturdy structure and introduces an element of industrial chic, making the storage solutions themselves part of the home’s decor. This approach feels more visually and architecturally interesting, adding a dynamic layer to interior spaces.

The incorporation of creative lighting further complements this theme, offering both functional and decorative benefits. These lighting solutions serve as artistic statements, enhancing the overall ambiance of a room and showcasing the design and construction industry’s drive to combine practicality with aesthetic pleasure.

Cutting-Edge Features and Fixtures

Pet water fillers emerged as a must-have feature, reflecting the industry’s attention to practicality and convenience in design. These, alongside workstation sinks, long pot-filling hoses, and other innovative kitchen and bath fixtures that promise enhanced utility and efficiency.

Technology and Design

The spotlight we saw on advanced visualization technologies, including 3D modeling and virtual reality (VR) tools by Chief Architect Software, reflects an ongoing industry shift towards more immersive and interactive design processes. These innovations enable real-time, navigable space visualizations, providing a detailed preview of planned projects and facilitating a deeper understanding and interaction with design concepts.

Lewis Builders has long embraced technology such as this, and it has revolutionized the way we approach custom home building. Our adept use of cutting-edge design and project management software ensures precise project visualization. Additionally, it deeply involves our clients in the design + build process. Clients can see real-time updates to their homes – down to the details of how natural light will interact with their landscape – and are active participants in crafting their dream homes. This approach enhances the personal connection to the space and ensures the final product truly aligns with their vision and lifestyle.

Seeing the expanding influence of these technologies at IBS 2024 reaffirms our dedication to innovation and encourages us in our ongoing efforts to create homes that blend modern luxury with careful craftsmanship.

“Best Of” KBIS

The Kitchen & Bath Industry Show (KBIS) concluded its latest edition by shining a spotlight on the groundbreaking products and designs that are set to redefine our living spaces. This year, the Best of KBIS Awards underscored the industry’s leap towards sustainability, wellness, and cutting-edge technology, heralding a new era in the way we conceptualize and experience our kitchens and bathrooms. Among the standouts, Kohler’s continued dominance was noteworthy, bagging the Best in Show award with its FreePower for Countertop – a pioneering solution that harvests electricity from everyday kitchen activities, marrying convenience with eco-consciousness.

The emphasis on sustainability and wellness echoed throughout the awards, with notable mentions like the RainStick Lite by RainStick, a water-saving shower, securing the Sustainable Standout gold award. This focus was paralleled in the wellness category by FOTILE’s M6A Water Purifier, highlighting the growing consumer emphasis on healthful living.

Yet, the awards didn’t just celebrate functionality; style was also in the limelight. The Style Statement categories celebrated aesthetic excellence, with Bertazzoni’s Professional Series 4’’ Induction Range in Carbonio leading the pack. These awards, and their accompanying Lookbook, admirably remind us that innovation does not compromise beauty.

Looking Ahead

Armed with insights from IBS and KBIS 2024, we at Lewis Builders are excited and invigorated for the future of home design. The trends and innovations seen at this year’s show reflect that personalized, vibrant, and practical living spaces are always in style.
